Many of our pupils have personal priority needs which are central to their learning and quality of life. We meet these needs through a range of therapies provided in partnership with other health care and education professionals.
The community paediatrician visits the school most weeks to carry out medical reviews.
The School’s Dental Team visits Ivel Valley School each term.
We are supported by two school nurses who are important members of the whole school team. They provide support for health issues, including routine medical screenings, monitoring weight and height, hearing and vision screening and Immunisation programmes, as well as arranging medical reviews with the community paediatrician. Parents/carers are welcome to contact the school nurses at any time if they have concerns about their child’s health or medical welfare.
We are supported by a small team of physiotherapists who are available to help those students who need their services. Pupils are normally referred to the physiotherapists by the community paediatrician or by their GP.
An occupational therapist visits Ivel Valley School on a regular basis and offers advice to staff and parents/carers on appropriate aids for specific pupils, sensory integration and programmes designed to improve the co-ordination and fine motor skills of pupils. We also directly employ an independent specialist occupational therapist who currently visits for at least ten days a term.
Speech and Language Therapy
Speech and language therapists visit weekly to assess and treat pupils who need assistance, and to develop communication programmes which are delivered in school. Ivel Valley also directly employs an independent speech and language consultant who attends two days per week. Parents/carers are always welcome to attend assessments and therapy sessions.
A therapist from the Music Therapy Service visits Ivel Valley School on a weekly basis to work with pupils who have been assessed as being suitable to benefit from their programme of support. Specialist resources are extremely limited and pupils that have been assessed as requiring music therapy support will normally be placed on a waiting list. Decisions about the allocation of music therapy support are made jointly by the school and the Music Therapy Service.
Service for Sensory Impairment
Members of the Sensory Impairment Team regularly visit Ivel Valley School. They work with staff to provide advice, assessments and support for pupils with sensory disabilities.
Educational psychologists work with the school to assess the learning needs of pupils and to help devise teaching strategies that may assist in meeting their particular needs.
